There’s something so old fashioned and false about putting someone in clothes they’d never ever wear, applying heavy make up and putting them in front of a plain background (don’t hate on me those who still do this!), and asking them to “look sexy”.
As a woman myself, this scenario is furthest away from making me feel sensual and confident. Which is why I use my own thoughts and feelings to create sessions that go away from Boudoir as such (boudoir means a bedroom, after all), and lean towards what myself and my mentor Geoff like to call ‘intimate lifesyle’ or ‘sensual lifestyle’.
Yes, I still use the term boudoir on my website but what I want to try to do is introduce a slightly different style, a different approach to ‘boudoir’ and the whole experience. Going away from heavy make up and false settings and instead creating imagery that is feminine, sensuous, intimate and more importantly – personal to the woman (or man) I am shooting.
You DON’T need to look a certain way to be “worthy” of a boudoir shoot, because it’s about bringing out your natural beauty and amazing personality, not fishing for something that’s not there. I don’t want you pose in a way that makes you feel vulnerable or embarrassed, I want you to connect with me and enjoy the experience.
I’ll be writing more on the topic later on, but here goes my latest shoot with the lovely Victoria Gray, who’s a photographer herself! (No pressure for me, right?). We had the talented Kate Atkinson do Victoria’s make up. She applied a very natural make up, going for the ‘barely there’ look that enhanced Victoria’s naturally smooth skin, creating a beautiful sheen when the light touched her face. Check out Kate’s page here.
Victoria and myself exchanged a few ideas in regards to outfits (with the help of Pinterest, of course), and I couldn’t have asked for better wardrobe options than what Victoria brought! The simple and cool tones of her outfits worked very well with the interior around her, and emphasised her skin tone.
Also, our cat made an appearance (she likes to say a friendly hello), until she ran into my reflector, making it fall and scaring a few lives out of her!
